“Fascinating” Heritage Book from Selby Civic Society

Want to know how a Selby-born botanist helped name a Gowthorpe pub? Or which Micklegate resident pioneered a game now played by millions world-wide? Where do you go to find a link to the star-spangled banner? When did a bomber demolish a Selby church spire… and who offered for sale most of the town-centre buildings in an auction?

The answers to all the above are revealed in a new book published by Selby Civic Society that is on sale now …in time for Christmas – an ideal stocking filler.

“50 fascinating Facts About Selby” is a compilation of fifty articles that were published weekly in the Selby Times through 2019.

Secretary David Moss said “2019 was a golden anniversary year for the Society – fifty years after it was founded in 1969. In that year Queen Elizabeth visited Selby Abbey to present the Maundy Money, and Selby Civic Society helped in the preparation of the town for her visit. Since then the Society has continued its mission to preserve, enhance and publicise the heritage and history of the town. So, fifty articles, researched and written by members about the town’s people, events and places seemed an ideal way to showcase Selby’s rich heritage. We had many complementary comments about the articles, and several requests to bring them together in a book. This has now been done, with some additional artwork added for good measure.”

Now on sale, copies can be purchased at the Selby Times office and Wetherells store in the Crescent, priced at £5.00. (Note: Wetherells store is currently closed until 3rd December).
